Most owners expect and are prepared for an itchy dog or cat in the summer months when allergies are in high gear, but what about in winter? A lot of our furry friends seem to get very itchy in the winter, when all the grass and pollen producing plants are buried or dormant. The answer may be dry skin. As with us, when the house gets closed up and the furnace gets going, some pets can get very dry. If this is the case with your pet, there are some things that can be done to provide them with some relief.Before starting any of these remedies, we recommend an examination by your veterinarian to rule out other causes of itch (infection, food or dust mite allergy, fungal infection or mites). If your pet does not have any of these conditions, relief may be found with skin supplements (such as Omega-3 fatty acids), a diet change, or moisturizing shampoos, sprays, or lotions.
