PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

In the past we have discussed stem cell therapy and how it can be used in our pets. If you like the thought of more natural treatments but are hesitant to have your pet undergo surgery (which is required for stem cell harvesting), Platlet-Rich Plasma may be for you (and your pet). Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a blood plasma that contains a high amount of platelets and growth factors. The growth factors and special proteins found in platelets can initiate tissue healing and decrease inflammation. It is a non-surgical way to focus the body's own healing factors on the area where they are needed. We have used PRP for many inflammatory conditions- topical wound healing, degenerative joint disease (arthritis), hip dysplasia, and soft tissue injuries. This procedure requires only a blood draw from your pet and is administered that same day. One blood sample can provide enough PRP for 3-6 treatments in most cases. If your pet has an inflammatory condition, PRP can be a great addition to their treatment plan.
