Stem Cell Therapy

Stem Cell Therapy

Is your pet suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia, or ligament or tendon damage? If so, then you might be interested in stem cell therapy. Stem cells are your animal's own healing cells. They serve as a self-repair system to replenish other cells and can become part of a cell with a specialized function (ie muscle, brain, or red blood cells). Adult stem cells are highly concentrated in fat tissue and the procedure to extract fat is quicker than a spay surgery. When stem cells are surgically harvested, they are then processed to 'activate' them for use. Once this process is completed, they are then injected into the area(s) of concern. Your pet's therapy would be completed in 1 day. Depending on the amount of stem cells harvested, there are generally enough cells to save for future treatments as well. In a recent study, dogs suffering from arthritis were treated with stem cell therapy. After 3 months, 99% of the dogs involved showed improvements in 1 or more of the following categories- pain score, range of motion, and lameness. For those of you who like to plan for the future, stem cells can be harvested from your puppy or kitten during spay or neuter surgeries and saved for later. Stem cells harvested from young animals have a higher yield and result in more 'doses' of stem cell therapy to be used in years ahead.
