In Case of Emergency...

Pet Emergency KitIn light of the numerous natural disasters that have occurred so far this year, we thought some information about emergency preparedness might be in order. In case of a disaster that could separate you from your pet (ie tornadoes), we recommend that all pets have a microchip. This is a small chip that is implanted between your pet's shoulder blades and contains your contact information. Most veterinary clinics and humane societies have scanners for these chips to help lost pets find their way home. This is a service that we offer at Packerland Veterinary Center and can be done without an examination in most cases. If your pet already has a microchip and your contact information has changed, make sure you contact the company to get this updated. Consider having a secondary contact person added to your pet's medical record for times when we cannot reach you and medical decisions need to be made for your pet.

You can also keep an emergency pet kit on hand with some of the following items:
  • Saline Eye Wash (to irrigate eyes or wounds)
  • Bandage materials and first aid tape
  • Digital flexible thermometer and KY jelly (for rectal use)
  • flashlight and batteries
  • leash or nylon stocking that can also be used as a muzzle or tourniquet
  • Benadryl
  • Pet's microchip ID, rabies tag number

Items to keep on hand for disaster/evacuation situations:
  • fresh/bottled water
  • supply of pet food
  • current photograph of pet (in case they get lost or separated from you)
  • a pet carrier with collapsible or non-spill bowls
